Paper Abstract:      Accessibility refers to how a product or service is available and how it can be easily accessed by the user. Accessibility has been systematically addressed by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). On the other hand, usability addresses the issue of how easy and intuitive a product or service is to use. An easy-to-learn method to evaluate usability is the heuristic evaluation, using Nielsen’s heuristics. Since a clear distinction between usability and accessibility is lacking on a deeper level, in this work, we present and discuss the mapping of the WCAG to Nielsen’s heuristics. This mapping is a closer inspection of how each WCAG principle may (or may not) be covered by an existing heuristic. The results indicate a strong relationship between these heuristics and guidelines. We believe that this approach may provide an effective path to a more comprehensive understanding of the relation between accessibility and usability.
